The bad news is that wheat is a definite No-No, the good news for all of us is that there are plenty of other healthy carbohydrate and grain options to fit into your Diet Solution fat burning meal plans perfectly.
White Rice vs. Brown Rice
Brown Rice is at the top of the “good” list. While white rice is okay you get nowhere near the same nutritional value as you get from brown rice.
They have similar amounts of calories, carbohydrates, and protein. With brown rice only the outermost layer of a grain of rice (the husk) is removed. White rice also has the next layers underneath the husk (the bran layer and the germ) removed. Several vitamins and dietary minerals are lost when this very important layer is removed (especially Vit B1, Vit B3, iron and most of the magnesium).
Fibre is also lost in white rice and this is important to the weight loss process…
- Fibre helps control blood sugar fluctuations, the secret to weight loss is keeping your blood sugar and your insulin under control
- Fiber helps you feel full for longer – it’s easier to stick to a diet if you don’t feel hungry all the time
- Fiber aids digestion, your bowel function needs to be regular, if you are not eliminating daily then weight loss will be difficult to maintain
Other Types of Rice
Basmati Rice
Basmati rice comes in white and brown varieties, the brown Basmati has a lower glycemic index than regular long grain brown rice.
Black Rice
Usually sold as unmilled rice, the fiber-rich black husks of the rice are not removed, making black rice very high in fiber. Also high in iron… ideal if you require iron-rich foods.
Jasmine
Often compared to Basmati Rice and sometimes used in cooking interchangeably, it also comes in brown and white varieties; choose the brown rice variety.
Wild Rice
This rice falls between brown and white rice on the nutitional scale, similar to brown rice, wild rice is less processed than white rice and as a result, obtains more nutrients, specifically protein, vitamin B1 and magnesium.
Rice Best To Avoid
Best to avoid white rice, processed microwave rice, any ready meals with added sauces and extra salt.
Of course your rice can only be healthy when combined with other healthy foods. Find out how to combine with healthy protein and fat at The Diet Solution Program
